What happened

Miami Police arrested a suspected hit-and-run driver after a chain of crashes in the city in which a bystander pursued and detained the driver twice while waiting for officers to arrive.

The incident unfolded on Saturday, May 7, 2022, beginning near Northeast 12th Avenue and Northeast 62nd Street. A driver in a large SUV struck a minivan and then drove away, the minivan’s driver said. She reported that she followed the SUV as it continued through the area and became involved in additional collisions before the driver fled again.

Sequence of events described by those involved

The minivan driver said the SUV driver briefly spoke with her after the initial crash and indicated he was intoxicated, then left the scene. She said she continued tracking the vehicle until it crashed into two more vehicles near Northeast 61st Street and Northeast Fourth Court.

After that second cluster of crashes, the SUV driver ran from the scene on foot, she said. At that point, another motorist—identified as Isaiah Jean—intervened and chased the fleeing driver. Jean said he caught the suspect and brought him back to the crash scene. He then reported that the suspect attempted to flee again and that he detained him a second time.

Jean said the driver “tried to escape twice,” and that he held him until police arrived.

Police response and what is confirmed

By Saturday night, Miami Police confirmed only that an arrest had been made in connection with the hit-and-run investigation. Authorities did not release the suspect’s name in initial public confirmations, and details such as potential impairment testing, injuries, or the specific traffic charges were not publicly detailed at that time.

The crashes remained under investigation. In cases like this, investigators typically work to document damage, locate any surveillance or witness video, and establish the timeline for each collision to determine which offenses apply to each segment of the incident.

Why bystander actions matter in hit-and-run cases

Hit-and-run investigations can hinge on rapid identification of the driver and vehicle, particularly when a suspect leaves before police arrive. When witnesses remain at the scene, call 911, and provide descriptions or video, it can help investigators preserve evidence and quickly locate a fleeing driver.

  • If a crash occurs, safety comes first: move to a safe location if possible and call 911.

  • Witnesses can help by noting the vehicle description, direction of travel, and license plate if it can be done safely.

  • Drivers involved in a crash are required to stop and provide information; leaving can escalate the case into a criminal investigation.

Miami Police have not released further public findings in the case described, and the outcome of any court proceedings would depend on charging decisions and subsequent hearings.
