Significant Congestion Alert: Miami E-Prix Race Day

Miami residents and commuters should prepare for heavy traffic in the northern part of the county today, Saturday, January 31, 2026. The 2026 Miami E-Prix is taking place at the Miami International Autodrome at Hard Rock Stadium. With gates opening at 7:00 AM and the headline concert and race scheduled for the afternoon, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) expects severe congestion on NW 199th Street, the Florida Turnpike, and the Palmetto Expressway (S.R. 826).

Travelers heading toward Miami Gardens or passing through the stadium district are advised to seek alternate routes or allow at least 60 minutes of additional travel time. Local law enforcement will be managing traffic flow around the Hard Rock Stadium complex throughout the day and into the late evening.

Major Roadworks and Infrastructure Projects

Several critical roadway projects will impact travel across the metropolitan area today:

  • PortMiami Access: The S.R. 886/Port Boulevard Roadway Project is officially underway. Commuters and cruise passengers heading to PortMiami should expect lane shifts and potential delays on the bridge connecting S.R. 5/U.S. 1/Biscayne Boulevard to the port entrance.
  • SW 8th Street Closure: There is a full closure of S.R. 90/SW 8th Street between SW 107th Avenue and SW 117th Avenue. This closure for bridge and road rehabilitation will force heavy detours near the Florida International University area. Motorists are encouraged to use SW 24th Street or Flagler Street as alternatives.
  • Golden Glades Interchange: Ongoing ramp and lane closures continue at the Golden Glades Interchange (GGI) as part of the massive reconstruction project. Expect shifting patterns when transitioning between I-95 and the Turnpike.

Public Transport and Rail Service Alerts

Miami-Dade Transit is operating on a modified schedule due to essential maintenance. The following impacts are expected today:

  • Metrorail Single-Tracking: Single-tracking is in effect all day between the Vizcaya and Martin Luther King Jr. stations. Northbound and southbound trains will alternate on a single track, resulting in 15-minute wait times during the day.
  • Nightly Service: After 8:00 PM, Metrorail frequencies will drop to every 30 minutes. An airport shuttle will continue to bridge service between Earlington Heights and the Miami International Airport station.

Airport and Weather Advisories

Travelers flying out of Miami International Airport (MIA) should be mindful of potential security delays following the partial government shutdown that began at midnight. While air traffic controllers are working, TSA staffing levels may fluctuate, potentially increasing wait times at checkpoints. Additionally, a Wind Advisory goes into effect at 2:00 PM today, followed by an Extreme Cold Watch tonight. High-profile vehicles should exercise caution on elevated bridges and causeways as gusty winds increase throughout the afternoon.
