Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in Miami should prepare for significant changes to public transit and potential evening congestion on the beach today, Thursday, February 26, 2026. While major highways like I-95 and the Palmetto Expressway are currently flowing at typical weekday volumes, several long-term construction projects and new transit protocols are now in effect that will impact your travel time.

Major Metrorail Disruptions

Miami-Dade Transit has implemented a critical service change that affects all passengers traveling to and from Miami International Airport. As of this week, the Orange Line is operating exclusively as an Airport Shuttle train between the Earlington Heights and Airport Metrorail stations. If you are traveling from downtown or southern stations, you must transfer at Earlington Heights to reach the airport. Additionally, the following transit alerts are in effect:

  • Dadeland South Single-Tracking: Due to the Intermodal Station project, trains are serving only one side of the platform at Dadeland South. Expect minor delays and check the GO Miami-Dade Transit app for real-time arrivals.
  • Metrorail Maintenance: Single-tracking is scheduled to begin after 9:00 p.m. tonight between the Vizcaya and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stations. Trains will run every 30 minutes during this window.
  • Metrobus Detours: Route 22 remains detoured in the Coconut Grove area due to roadwork near SW 22nd Avenue, and northbound trips on NW 7th Avenue are being rerouted between 183rd Street and 185th Drive.

Highway and Roadwork Updates

Major arteries continue to see heavy activity from the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project. Commuters should watch for lane shifts and narrowed lanes near the interchange of SR 836 and I-95. On the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826), the northbound ramp to northbound I-75 remains under a lane closure advisory, which may slow merging traffic during the morning and afternoon peaks.

Miami Beach Evening Traffic Plan

Starting at 6:00 p.m. this evening, the City of Miami Beach will implement its high-impact traffic plan for the spring break season. This includes restricted access in the South of Fifth and Flamingo Park neighborhoods. Motorists heading to the island should expect security checkpoints and license plate readers at the MacArthur and Julia Tuttle causeways. Non-resident parking rates in city garages have been increased to $40 to manage congestion.

Commuter Tips

  • Allow an extra 15-20 minutes if your commute involves a transfer to the Airport Metrorail station.
  • Avoid the side streets of South Beach after 6:00 p.m. unless you have resident access.
  • Check FDOT’s live cameras before heading out for the latest on the I-95/SR 836 interchange.
