Metrorail Service Changes and Overnight Expressway Closures Impact Friday Commuters

Morning Commute: Metrorail and Public Transit Adjustments
Commuters utilizing public transport today, Friday, February 27, 2026, should prepare for significant service adjustments on the Metrorail system. Following updates from Miami-Dade Transit, the Orange Line is currently operating as a dedicated Airport Shuttle between the Earlington Heights and Miami International Airport stations. Passengers traveling to or from the airport from other parts of the system must transfer at Earlington Heights to the shuttle train. Additionally, single-tracking remains in effect at the Dadeland South Station due to ongoing intermodal station improvements, which may cause minor delays for Green Line riders.
Riders of the MetroConnect on-demand service are also reminded that as of this month, service has been discontinued in the Civic Center and Waterford Business District zones. MetroConnect now operates on a weekday-only schedule from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Daytime Roadworks and Bus Detours
Several surface level projects are impacting local traffic flow throughout the day:
- Biscayne Boulevard: A single eastbound lane closure is scheduled at 2138 Biscayne Boulevard between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for maintenance work.
- Route 77 Detour: Northbound trips are currently detoured from NW 7th Avenue between 183rd Street and 185th Drive due to road construction, with buses utilizing NW 9th Avenue as an alternate.
- Route 22 Detour: Southbound trips in the Coconut Grove area are being detoured between Secoffee Street and SW 22nd Avenue.
- Okeechobee Road (SR 25): Ongoing reconstruction continues near the Palmetto Expressway interchange. Expect varying traffic patterns and heavy machinery in the area.
Evening and Overnight Alerts: SR 836 and I-95
For those traveling late tonight, the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project will trigger major closures starting in the evening. On SR 836 (Dolphin Expressway), two westbound lanes from I-95 to NW 17th Avenue will close at 10:00 p.m. and remain shut until 9:00 a.m. Saturday. Eastbound travelers will face a full closure of all lanes at NW 17th Avenue starting at 11:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Saturday. Detours will direct eastbound traffic south at NW 17th Avenue toward SW 1st Street to reconnect with I-95.
On I-95, up to four lanes will be closed in both directions between NW 29th Street and NW 8th Street starting at 11:00 p.m. for bridge work. Drivers are urged to use the Florida's Turnpike or local alternates like NW 7th Avenue for late-night travel.
Regional Update: Alligator Alley Reopened
In a positive update for long-distance travelers, FDOT confirmed that Alligator Alley (I-75) fully reopened in both directions as of 6:00 a.m. this morning. The stretch between US-27 and SR-29 had been closed overnight due to heavy smoke and low visibility from a nearby wildfire. While the roadway is open, motorists should remain alert for lingering haze throughout the morning.
