Miami City Commission Convenes for Pivotal Combined Legislative Session Today

Significant Combined Commission Meeting at City Hall
Today, Thursday, March 12, 2026, the City of Miami is hosting a major City Commission meeting that marks a shift in the standard legislative calendar. Following the adoption of Resolution R-26-0050, city officials have combined the scheduled meetings for March 12 and March 26 into a single, comprehensive session. The meeting is currently underway at Miami City Hall, located at 3500 Pan American Drive, starting at 9:00 a.m.
Agenda Highlights and Urban Initiatives
The session covers a broad range of municipal priorities. Following the main commission meeting, the Omni Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is scheduled to meet at 9:30 a.m. to discuss ongoing development projects in the district. Although originally scheduled, the Southeast Overtown/Park West CRA meeting for today has been officially cancelled.
A primary focus for today’s legislative review includes new strategies for urban mobility and parking. Officials are moving forward with legislation that authorizes parking enforcers to issue citations by mail for violations occurring within the city's newly established "smart loading zones." This measure is intended to address the high volume of delivery and rideshare traffic in the downtown core by ensuring more efficient use of curb space. Additionally, the Infrastructure, Innovation, and Technology Committee is reviewing a $6.2 million contract to modernize the control centers for the Metrorail and Metromover systems, aimed at enhancing station safety and communication reliability.
Community Safety and Infrastructure Milestones
In a move to increase police presence in the financial district, the Downtown Development Authority and the Miami Police Department are introducing two new horses, named Café and Leche, to the Brickell area mounted unit. This initiative reflects a broader effort to improve community engagement and public safety through visible neighborhood patrols. Mayor Eileen Higgins has also emphasized the expansion of the "Same Day–No Delay" walk-thru service for residential permits, which is designed to streamline home improvement projects for local residents.
Afternoon Sessions and Public Participation
Later today, at 1:00 p.m., the Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) will convene at the Stephen P. Clark Center. The agenda for this afternoon session includes chairperson elections and building code appeals involving properties in the Miami Beach area. Residents who wish to participate in the democratic process can provide public comments in person at City Hall or through the city’s online portal. The morning commission session is being broadcast live on the city’s official website and through various social media and local cable platforms to ensure maximum transparency for Miami residents.
