Miami-Dade police arrest man accused of organizing drag racing street takeovers in Doral investigation

Arrest follows investigation into online promotion of illegal “intersection takeover” events
A 32-year-old man has been arrested in Miami-Dade County on allegations that he organized illegal drag racing events and “intersection takeovers,” incidents in which groups of vehicles block public roadways to carry out stunts such as drifting, burnouts and donuts.
Police identified the suspect as Jose Alfredo Martinez. Authorities said the arrest stems from an investigation that focused on accounts used to post and promote takeover locations and car meetups intended for reckless driving activity.
Where and when the arrest occurred
Police reported that Martinez was taken into custody on January 17, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., near 9300 NW 41 Street in Doral. Investigators said multiple agencies assisted in locating and arresting him, including the Florida Highway Patrol and the Broward Sheriff’s Office VIPER unit.
Charges filed in the case
Authorities said Martinez faces multiple charges tied to alleged takeover and racing activity, as well as conduct during encounters with law enforcement. The listed charges include:
- Facilitating drag racing on a highway
- Attempting to flee or elude law enforcement
- Driving with a suspended license
- Resisting an officer without violence
- Reckless driving
- Inciting a riot
- Aggravated obstruction of a highway
Police also said detectives learned Martinez had recently fled from the Florida Highway Patrol during a routine traffic stop. Authorities further stated he was out on bond in an unrelated case involving allegations of aggravated assault and resisting officers with violence.
How organizers are alleged to coordinate street takeovers
Investigators described street takeover organizing as a coordinated effort that relies heavily on online communication to rapidly direct drivers and spectators to specific intersections or roadway segments. Police said their investigation began after monitoring social media activity tied to takeover announcements and that an account they identified had repeatedly posted locations for such events.
Police described these gatherings as organized car meets intended for illegal drag racing and stunt driving on public roads, which can disrupt traffic and limit roadway access.
Investigation remains active
Police said the investigation is ongoing. Officials urged anyone with information related to illegal drag racing or intersection takeovers in Miami-Dade County to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers.
As with any criminal case, the charges are allegations and will be tested in court.
