Suspect detained after dump truck reported stolen from construction site

Miami-Dade Police officers took a suspect into custody after a dump truck was reported stolen from a construction site in Wynwood, a case that unfolded across several neighborhoods and ended with a detention in northwest Miami-Dade.

The incident occurred on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023. Police said the dump truck was taken from a Wynwood work site and later traveled into northwest Miami-Dade, where officers ultimately located and apprehended the suspect near Northwest 57th Street and 15th Avenue.

How the stolen truck was located

Investigators described a sequence in which the truck’s owner realized the vehicle had been taken and contacted others while trying to locate it. During that effort, a person known to the owner spotted the truck on the road and followed it while contacting law enforcement. Police said this call came in at about 2:30 p.m., helping officers track the vehicle’s movements and position units to intervene.

Police took over the pursuit after the truck was seen in the area of Northwest 31st Avenue and Northwest 46th Street. The circumstances surrounding the initial theft, including how the vehicle was accessed at the construction site and whether keys were involved, were not publicly detailed.

Passenger injured after exiting the moving truck

During the attempt to stop the stolen dump truck, police said a woman who was riding in the passenger seat exited the vehicle. She was struck by the truck as she got out and was injured.

Emergency responders transported her to a hospital from the area of Northwest 58th Street and 19th Avenue. Police did not release her identity or provide a condition update.

Police said the passenger was clipped by the stolen truck after she jumped out during the stop attempt.

Suspect taken to hospital; conditions not released

Authorities said the suspect was also transported to a hospital with injuries sustained during the incident. The nature of those injuries, and whether they occurred during the driving sequence, the detention, or afterward, was not specified. Police did not release the suspect’s name in the information made public at the time.

What remains unknown

  • Whether any charges were filed immediately following the detention
  • Whether additional suspects were involved in the theft
  • The extent of damage, if any, caused during the pursuit
  • Updated medical conditions for both the woman and the suspect

The scene was cleared later the same day. The case remained an active law-enforcement matter pending further updates on injuries and potential criminal charges.
