Miami Officials Celebrate Flagler Street Milestone as City Boards Convene Today

Downtown Infrastructure Milestone: Flagler Street Section C Opens

Today, Wednesday, March 4, 2026, marks a significant achievement for Miami’s urban revitalization efforts. City of Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins, alongside City Commissioners and representatives from the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), will lead a commemorative ceremony at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate the official opening of Section C of the Downtown Flagler Street Beautification Project. The event, held at the intersection of East Flagler Street and Northeast 1st Avenue, signals the completion of the third major segment of the historic corridor’s overhaul.

The revamped Section C introduces a "festival design" intended to transform the area into a premier pedestrian destination. Key features include:

  • Significantly expanded sidewalks to encourage foot traffic and outdoor dining.
  • Upgraded lighting and signage systems to improve safety and navigation.
  • The installation of new public art pieces integrated into the streetscape.
  • A level street design that allows for seamless closure to vehicular traffic during community events.

While Section C is now fully operational for both pedestrians and vehicles, the City of Miami Office of Capital Improvements (OCI) confirmed that work will proceed immediately on the final stages of the project. Section D is slated for completion later this month, while the final segment, Section E, is expected to be finished by late April 2026.

Infrastructure Expansion: New Metro Express Garage Debuts

In addition to the downtown celebrations, Miami-Dade transit officials announced that the new $58 million parking garage at the Metro Express bus station on Southwest 168th Street is scheduled to open today. The five-level facility provides 644 parking spaces and is a central component of the county’s effort to enhance the South Dade Transitway. The site features a dedicated kiss-and-ride area, secure bicycle storage, and several electric vehicle charging stations, aiming to reduce traffic congestion for commuters heading toward the urban core.

Evening Sessions: Planning, Zoning, and Regional Awards

The legislative calendar remains active into the evening. At 6:30 p.m., the City of Miami Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board will convene at City Hall to review several high-profile land-use applications. The board’s decisions today are expected to influence residential density and architectural standards in the city’s rapidly growing neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, in Miami Beach, the City Commission is scheduled to hold a Presentations and Awards Meeting at 5:00 p.m. This session is dedicated to honoring local community leaders and presenting municipal recognitions before the commission moves into its heavy legislative session later this month. These meetings come as the region prepares for a busy spring season, including the upcoming 305 Day festivities on March 5 and the opening of the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair next week.
