Overnight Closures on I-95 and Metrorail Service Changes Impact Thursday Commute

I-95 and I-395 Overnight Lane Closures
Miami commuters should prepare for significant traffic disruptions tonight as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) continues its scheduled maintenance and reconstruction work on major expressways. Starting at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, up to four lanes on both northbound and southbound I-95 will be closed between NW 8th Street and NW 29th Street. These closures are expected to remain in place until 5:30 a.m. Friday morning.
In addition to the mainline lane reductions, the NW 8th Street entrance ramp to northbound I-95 will be fully closed tonight during the same window. Drivers wishing to access the interstate from this area are advised to detour by traveling east on NW 8th Street, turning left onto NE 1st Avenue, and entering the westbound I-395 ramp to reach northbound I-95. Further south, motorists on eastbound I-395 should expect single-lane closures between I-95 and Biscayne Boulevard beginning at 10:00 p.m.
Major Artery Roadworks: Biscayne Blvd and PortMiami
Commuters utilizing major surface streets through the urban core will also face persistent work zones. On State Road 5 (Biscayne Boulevard), a maintenance project near the 2138 block continues to restrict one eastbound lane. This closure is active during daytime hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., which may cause bottlenecking for those traveling toward the Edgewater area.
Meanwhile, the SR 886 (Port Boulevard) roadway project is now in full swing. Construction crews are active between US-1 and the entrance to PortMiami. While access to the port remains open for cruise passengers and commercial traffic, the ongoing drainage and pavement work may cause intermittent delays and shifting traffic patterns throughout the day.
Public Transit: Metrorail and MetroConnect Updates
For those relying on public transportation, Miami-Dade Transit has implemented late-night service adjustments. As part of a system-wide track upgrade program, single-tracking will be in effect after 8:00 p.m. on weekdays. This involves trains alternating on a single track between various stations to allow for safe maintenance on the opposite side. Commuters should expect Green and Orange Line frequencies to drop to every 30 minutes during the late-evening hours.
- Airport Transfers: Passengers heading to Miami International Airport after 8:00 p.m. must transfer at the Earlington Heights station to catch the dedicated Airport Shuttle train.
- MetroConnect Service: Riders are reminded that MetroConnect has transitioned to a weekday-only schedule. Service is available today until 7:00 p.m. with a standard fare of $3.75 per trip.
- Coral Reef Drive: In South Dade, paving operations continue on SW 152nd Street (Coral Reef Drive). Lane reductions are active between 9:00 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. near the Turnpike intersection.
Commuters are encouraged to leave at least 15 minutes earlier than usual for evening trips and to utilize real-time transit tracking apps to monitor live arrival times.
