Incident reported on Miami Gardens campus

Miami Gardens Police are investigating a reported sexual battery involving a Florida Memorial University student after officers were dispatched to the university’s Miami Gardens campus on Sunday morning, January 25, 2026.

Police responded at about 7 a.m. to the 15800 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue following a report of the assault. The university’s main campus is located in that area.

What police say happened

Based on a preliminary investigation described by police, the student had been waiting at a bus stop when she noticed an unknown man whistling at her. Police said she then walked back onto campus toward her dormitory area because she feared for her safety.

Investigators said the man followed her onto campus, pinned her against a building door and committed a sexual battery. The suspect then fled in an unknown direction, police said.

Suspect description and search

Police described the suspect as a man about 6 feet tall with a medium complexion who was last seen wearing a black hoodie and black pants. Authorities have not announced an arrest and have not released additional identifying information.

  • Location: Florida Memorial University campus, Miami Gardens (15800 block of NW 42nd Avenue)
  • Time reported: about 7 a.m., Sunday, January 25, 2026
  • Suspect: approximately 6 feet tall; medium complexion; black hoodie and black pants

Campus response and reporting options

Florida Memorial University maintains a campus safety operation with 24/7 reporting lines and directs emergencies to the 911 system. The university also identifies its Title IX office as the campus point of contact for sex-based discrimination and harassment matters, and its counseling services list support resources for students reporting sexual violence.

If you or someone you know needs help after sexual violence, immediate safety comes first. In an emergency, call 911. Many campuses also provide Title IX reporting options and counseling support for students.

Why this case can trigger wider safety notifications

Colleges and universities that participate in federal student-aid programs generally operate under federal campus-safety disclosure requirements that include maintaining crime logs and evaluating whether certain reported crimes pose an ongoing or serious threat requiring a campus-wide warning. Those requirements typically aim to provide timely information while protecting victim confidentiality.

The investigation remains active. Miami Gardens Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the department or report tips through Miami-Dade County’s Crime Stoppers program.
