Public Notice: Downtown Infrastructure Resumption and Health Advisories

Official City Notice: Infrastructure and Construction Progress
The City of Miami is providing an update on major infrastructure projects active as of Sunday, February 15, 2026. Most notably, construction has officially resumed on the Flagler Street Improvement project in Downtown Miami. Following a series of delays, crews returned to work this past week at the intersection of Flagler Street and First Avenue. Residents should expect continued activity involving the laying of brick pavers and sidewalk finishing. Officials anticipate the reopening of this critical intersection by next week, barring unforeseen weather events.
In District 1, the city has launched two new traffic calming initiatives beginning this month. Work is currently underway to install safety devices on NW 15th Avenue between NW 7th Street and NW 9th Street. Additionally, roadway and drainage improvements have commenced on NW 17th Street from NW 14th Avenue to NW 15th Avenue. These projects are part of a broader resilience plan slated for completion by the summer of 2026. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid localized delays in these work zones.
Public Health Advisory: Mosquito-Borne Illness Monitoring
The Florida Department of Health (DOH) in Miami-Dade County has issued a proactive health advisory following the confirmation of 10 travel-related Chikungunya cases and one rare instance of local transmission within the county as of mid-February 2026. Health officials are monitoring a surge in cases linked to Caribbean travel and are urging residents to take the following precautions:
- Drain and Cover: Eliminate standing water in tires, buckets, and birdbaths where mosquitoes breed.
- Personal Protection: Use repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outdoors.
- Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, particularly during dawn and dusk when mosquito activity is highest.
While the local risk remains low, the DOH and Miami-Dade Mosquito Control are increasing surveillance and treatment in affected neighborhoods to prevent further spread.
Public Service Announcement: Holiday Office Closures
Residents are reminded that all City of Miami and Miami-Dade County administrative offices, including the Department of Health, will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Washington’s Birthday (Presidents' Day). While emergency services and trash collection schedules will remain operational, regular business hours for permitting, licensing, and public records will resume on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Residents are encouraged to utilize online portals for service requests during the holiday weekend.
Affordable Housing Milestone
City officials celebrated the official groundbreaking of the "Dulce Vida" mixed-income housing community in Allapattah on Friday. Located at 1785 NW 35th Street, this project is among the first to move into construction under the Florida Live Local Act. Once completed, the development will provide 230 rental units and a modern 8,500-square-foot public library at the ground level, addressing the critical need for workforce housing in the urban core.
