Overview of Sunday Road Conditions

Commuters and visitors in Miami should prepare for a busy Sunday, March 8, 2026, as the city balances major transit maintenance, large-scale community events, and the beginning of high-impact Spring Break traffic management. While highway traffic remains steady, significant local detours and public transport modifications will require extra travel time, particularly in Downtown, Coral Gables, and Miami Beach.

Major Event Alerts: Carnaval on the Mile

Drivers in Coral Gables should expect significant congestion and road closures on and around Miracle Mile for the final day of Carnaval on the Mile. Miracle Mile is closed to vehicular traffic between LeJeune Road and Douglas Road. Nearby north-south arteries, including Ponce de Leon Boulevard, are expected to see heavy volume. Motorists are encouraged to use Bird Road or SW 8th Street as east-west alternatives to bypass the festival area.

Public Transit Service Modifications

Miami-Dade Transit has issued several critical alerts for Sunday travelers:

  • Metromover Inner Loop: Effective March 3, the Inner Loop is operating on a modified schedule. All Metromover trains (Inner, Omni, and Brickell loops) are currently running on the same track in a single direction to allow for standard track maintenance.
  • Station Closure: The Miami Avenue Station remains closed. Passengers are advised to use the Third Street Station, located two blocks south, as the primary alternative.
  • Metrorail Delays: Ongoing infrastructure improvements at Dadeland South Station have necessitated single-tracking. Expect Green and Orange Line trains to operate with 15-to-30-minute frequencies throughout Sunday.

Miami Beach High-Impact Traffic Plan

Miami Beach is currently in a "high-impact period" due to Spring Break. Starting tonight at 6:00 PM, the Miami Beach Police Department will implement a restricted traffic plan in the South of Fifth and Flamingo Park neighborhoods. Access to these residential areas will be limited to local residents and business patrons via Alton Road. Furthermore, a License Plate Reader (LPR) detail will be active on the 5th Street corridor starting at 10:00 PM tonight, which may cause sudden slowdowns for eastbound traffic entering the island.

Infrastructure and Construction Updates

  • I-395/Signature Bridge: Construction continues on the signature bridge arches. While no full closures are scheduled for Sunday daytime, motorists on the I-395 mainline should be alert for shifting lanes and construction vehicles near the Biscayne Boulevard ramps.
  • NW South River Drive: A full closure remains in effect on NW South River Drive between the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) off-ramp and W 18th Avenue for bridge demolition work. This closure is expected to last until March 19.
  • Biscayne Boulevard: Utility work is resulting in periodic single-lane closures on North Biscayne Boulevard near the intersections of NE 151 Street and NE 192 Street.
