Police response ends in fatal shooting on SW 7th Terrace

A man described by investigators as armed with a knife was shot and killed by Sweetwater police officers Wednesday evening after a 911 call reporting a domestic altercation in the 11600 block of SW 7th Terrace. The shooting occurred after officers arrived and encountered the man and a woman at the residence.

Authorities said the call came in at about 6:25 p.m. Four officers responded. Investigators have not released the man’s name and estimated his age at about 30.

What investigators say happened

Officers arriving at the home found a woman and the man, who investigators said was holding a knife. Police described the moments that followed as a confrontation that ended with officers firing their weapons. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not publicly detailed what actions immediately preceded the gunfire, including the distance between the man and officers, whether less-lethal tools were used or attempted, or how long the encounter lasted from arrival to shooting. It was also not immediately clear how many of the four responding officers fired.

Pregnant woman taken to the hospital

Investigators said the woman involved in the call was five months pregnant and had bruises. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. No additional medical details were released, and no other injuries were reported by authorities in the initial account.

Independent state investigation underway

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation into the shooting. State-led reviews are commonly used in Florida when local agencies are involved in a fatal use-of-force incident, with the aim of independently documenting evidence and witness statements and presenting findings for prosecutorial review.
