Commuter Summary for Thursday, February 5

Miami commuters should prepare for a mix of event-related congestion and ongoing infrastructure delays this morning. With the start of a major local festival at Virginia Key and new reports of structural complications surrounding the downtown 'Signature Bridge' project, travel times through the urban core and toward the beaches are expected to be higher than average. Local law enforcement is advising motorists to utilize transit apps to navigate around evolving lane shifts.

Event Alert: Love Burn 2026 at Virginia Key

Starting today, February 5, and running through February 8, the Love Burn festival returns to Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. This large-scale event is expected to draw thousands of participants to the area, creating significant bottlenecking along the Rickenbacker Causeway. Commuters who typically use the causeway for recreation or access to Key Biscayne should anticipate heavy volumes between 10:00 a.m. and late tonight. If you are not attending the event, consider adjusting your travel times to avoid the mid-morning and early-evening peak arrivals.

Ongoing Major Roadwork: The Signature Bridge

The I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project continues to be the most significant disruption in the Miami area. As of this week, reports have surfaced regarding further delays to the completion of the iconic six-arch bridge over Biscayne Boulevard, now pushed toward 2029. For today’s commute, drivers should note that the ramps connecting southbound I-95 to eastbound I-395 remain under heavy construction, as do the segments linking westbound I-395 to southbound I-95. These areas are prone to sudden lane shifts and reduced speed limits. Motorists are urged to stay alert for construction crews working near the median, especially during the off-peak hours when material hauling is most active.

Metrobus and Metrorail Service Alerts

Public transport users should be aware of several specific service disruptions today:

  • Metrobus Route 87: A detour remains in effect between SW 24 Street (Coral Way) and SW 40 Street (Bird Road) due to localized road closures. This detour has resulted in reported delays of up to one hour for some riders.
  • Metrorail Maintenance: Miami-Dade Transit is scheduled to perform track preventive maintenance tonight starting at 8:00 p.m. Expect single-tracking service between the Vizcaya and Dr. Martin L. King Jr. stations. Trains will operate every 30 minutes during this period, and an Airport Shuttle will be required for those transferring at Earlington Heights.

Regional Roadway Updates

Outside of the downtown core, roadwork is active in Hallandale Beach with a 24-hour closure on NE 12th Avenue between NE 4th Court and NE 5th Street. This closure is part of the LS#6 replacement project and will remain in place for several months. Additionally, long-distance commuters heading north on I-95 should remain cautious; while recent wildfire smoke in Brevard County has cleared, periodic low visibility has been reported earlier this week near Mile Marker 168.
