Charges filed after June 2025 incident in Overtown

Two boys, ages 12 and 13, are facing adult felony charges in Miami-Dade County following allegations that a 12-year-old girl was raped in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood in June 2025. Court records show both were booked into the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department’s Metrowest Detention Center on Thursday, February 26, 2026, and appeared in adult bond court on Friday, February 27, 2026.

The case centers on an incident investigators placed at about 10 p.m. on June 18, 2025. Police reports identify the alleged scene as a community garden known as The Green Haven Project, located at 1160 NW Second Ave., near a nearby elementary school campus.

What investigators allege happened

Investigators allege the girl was approached while leaving a friend’s home in Overtown and was taken to the community garden, where she was restrained. The allegations state that one boy sexually assaulted her while others were present, and that rocks were placed in her mouth to prevent her from screaming. Police reports also describe the girl’s cries being heard by a nearby resident, and that the assault ended when the group heard the victim’s father calling for her, prompting the boys to run.

The reported sequence of events includes information attributed to a witness and to a recording described in law-enforcement documents. Investigators also state that a witness later flagged down a Miami Police Department officer to report the incident, leading to additional interviews and arrests.

Adult-court filing, detention status, and co-defendants

The 13-year-old is facing charges that include sexual battery causing serious injury, false imprisonment, and kidnapping. The 12-year-old is charged with sexual battery causing serious injury and false imprisonment. Both were ordered held without bond at their adult bond court appearance.

A third boy, 15, is facing juvenile charges connected to the case. A fourth boy was described in police records as a witness.

  • Alleged offense date and time: June 18, 2025, around 10 p.m.

  • Location described in records: The Green Haven Project community garden, Overtown

  • Detention status as of Feb. 27, 2026: both defendants held without bond

What the case signals about Florida’s justice process for juveniles

While juvenile defendants are typically handled in the juvenile system, Florida law allows certain serious felony cases to be prosecuted in adult court under defined circumstances. In this case, the two younger defendants were transferred into adult proceedings and appeared before a circuit judge in adult bond court, where the court addressed the charges and custody status.
